emu runs seventeen game systems on your Mac, from 8-bit cartridges to GameCube and PlayStation 2 — in a native Mac app, not a port of a phone screen. One purchase, no advertising, nothing to unlock. BUILT FOR APPLE SILICON GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Nintendo 64 run through native recompilers on M-series Macs, so the demanding systems are not left to an interpreter. emu requires an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or later) running macOS 14 Sonoma or newer. Intel Macs are not supported. GETTING STARTED TAKES THREE STEPS 1. Click Import and pick a backup of a game you own. 2. The system is identified from the file's contents, so you never choose one. 3. Click it in your library and it opens in its own window. Files can stay inside a ZIP, and a CUE sheet can be selected together with its BIN files. Large disc images are copied into place rather than expanded in memory. ONE LIBRARY, ONE WINDOW PER GAME Browse everything or one system from the sidebar, search by name, and star what you keep coming back to. Every game gets its own window with Pause, Save State and Load State in the toolbar, and you can keep several titles open side by side. YOUR KEYBOARD OR ANY GAMEPAD Play straight away on the keyboard — arrows, Z/X/A/S, Return and Space — or connect a Bluetooth or USB controller and it is recognised on its own. Buttons are matched by position rather than by the printed labels, so a different controller plays the same way. Reassign any controller button or keyboard key by pressing it in Settings, keep sticky player 1 / player 2 assignment, and tune the stick dead zone. SAVES HAPPEN QUIETLY In-game and memory-card saves are written every 30 seconds and again when you close the window. Save State and Load State give you a quick state at any moment, and that state is still there the next time you open the game. TWO PLAYERS, ANY TWO DEVICES Host a two-player game on your Mac and a code appears; a friend types it into emu on an iPhone or another Mac and joins as player 2 — without a copy of the game. The two devices connect directly; gameplay never passes through a server. Two-player titles for NES, SNES, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Mega Drive, Master System and PC Engine can be hosted. BRING YOUR OWN GAMES — REQUIREMENTS DIFFER BY SYSTEM No games and no BIOS files are bundled, and nothing can be obtained from inside the app. Use backups of software you are legally entitled to use. Runs with just your game file: NES, SNES, Game Boy / Color, Mega Drive / Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16, WonderSwan / Color, Nintendo 64, GameCube, PlayStation 2, PSP Also needs a BIOS you dumped from your own console: PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Game Boy Advance, Neo Geo Pocket / Color If you are here for Xbox: It needs three files you supply yourself — an MCPX ROM, a compatible Flash BIOS and a hard-disk image — and it is the least tested system in this release. Please treat Xbox as experimental and do not buy emu for it. ABOUT SPEED GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Sega Saturn are still marked experimental: most titles we tried hold full speed on an M-series Mac, but how well a particular game plays depends on the title. PSP uses an interpreter on the Mac. Please do not buy on the assumption that a specific game will run perfectly. PRIVATE BY DESIGN emu has no accounts and no tracking. Online versus exchanges a short connection handshake through a signaling service, then the two devices talk to each other directly. Apple silicon Mac, macOS 14 or later. English and Japanese. emu is built on open-source emulators including ares, PPSSPP, Dolphin, xemu, Play! and Yaba Sanshiro.
