Description

Moped is a small, light, native plain-text editor for macOS. It opens fast, stays out of the way, and never tries to be a word processor: no rich text, no embedded fonts, no layout — just the characters you typed, saved exactly as you typed them. If you have been looking for something simpler than TextEdit for a quick note, or something lighter than a full IDE for that one config file, Moped is built for both. EVERYDAY PLAIN TEXT • Opens instantly and behaves like a proper macOS document app — New, Open Recent, Duplicate, Revert, and window tabbing all work the way you expect • Paste is always plain text, and smart quotes, smart dashes, and autocorrect stay out of your file • Automatic text-encoding detection, with files written back in the encoding they arrived in • Line endings are preserved: a Windows file stays CRLF and a classic Mac file stays CR, including the lines you add. The status bar shows which convention a document uses, and lets you change it • Declines binary files rather than mangling them, and asks before reloading a file another app has changed • Printing, six app icons to choose from, and session restore that reopens your documents where you left them FOR CODE AND CONFIG • Syntax highlighting for two dozen languages, offered under 35 names in the picker: Swift, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, JSX, TSX, Go, Rust, Java, C, C++, C#, PHP, Ruby, SQL, HTML, XML, CSS, JSON, YAML, TOML, Markdown, shell scripts, and unified diffs • Line-number gutter with current-line emphasis, optional word wrap, and indentation that matches whatever the document already uses • Comment or uncomment a selection with ⌘/, using the document language's own marker • Find and Find & Replace with full regular expression support, plus Jump to Line • A status bar showing document type and cursor position, with a language picker to override detection on the spot • Files up to 16 MB, with highlighting stepping aside past 256 KB so typing stays instant THEMES Eight themes are included: Xcode-like, Default, Solarized, Ocean, Forest, Nebula, the yellow-on-blue Turbo, and a System theme that borrows macOS's own colors. All but Turbo carry both a light and a dark palette and switch as your Mac does, live. Beyond those, a theme is simply a small JSON file — open the themes folder from Settings, double-click one to edit it in Moped itself, and your own themes join the picker. Any installed font works, at any size, with an option to list only the monospaced ones. COMMAND LINE Moped ships a moped command for opening files from Terminal, set up from the app menu. With moped --wait it serves nicely as your Git commit editor. MADE FOR MACOS Moped is written in Swift with SwiftUI and AppKit, runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel, and is fully sandboxed with no network access of any kind. Your files never leave your Mac. Moped speaks German, English, Spanish, Finnish, French, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Ukrainian. Free and open source under the GNU General Public License v3. Requires macOS 14 or later.

Nouveautés

Version 3.0.1 · 24/08/2026

Moped's editor is now Moped's own code. Syntax highlighting, line numbering, indentation, and comment handling all moved into a local package with no third-party dependencies, replacing Highlightr and, briefly, STTextView and Neon. NEW • Homegrown syntax highlighting for two dozen languages, offered under 35 names in the picker. New here: JSX, TSX, TOML, XML, and unified diff. Highlighting is incremental, so only the lines you edit are re-colored, and the colors never enter your file or your undo history. • Four new themes — Ocean, Forest, Nebula, and Turbo — alongside Default, Solarized, Xcode-like, and a System theme that follows your appearance. Every theme except Turbo pairs a light and a dark palette and switches with the system. • Custom themes. Write a .mopedtheme JSON file, drop it in the themes folder, and it appears in the picker. Settings ▸ Appearance ▸ Reveal Themes Folder opens that folder, and double-clicking a theme opens it in Moped with JSON highlighting already on. • Line endings are preserved. A Windows (CRLF) or classic Mac (CR) file keeps its convention, including the lines you add, and the status bar shows which one a document uses and lets you change it. • Indentation detection — Moped notices whether a file uses tabs, 2, 4, or 8 spaces and matches it. • Binary-file protection. Moped checks the first 8 KB and refuses files that are not text, instead of opening them as mojibake and re-encoding them on save. • A moped command-line tool with a --wait mode, so it works as a git editor. • Whitespace indicators (Xcode style) shown at your option. • Alternate app icons, session restore, and a redesigned Settings window. • A full user manual, reachable from Help ▸ Moped Help. CHANGED • Maximum file size is now 16 MB, up from 4 MB. Files over 256 KB open with highlighting switched off so typing stays responsive. • The language picker lists only languages that actually highlight, rather than every file type Moped can open. • Find and Replace uses the system find bar, which sits above the text instead of covering it, with full regex support. ⌘⌥F opens it with the replace field already showing. • Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. UPGRADING FROM 2.x Your settings carry over. Light and dark theme variants collapsed into single appearance-following themes, so a saved Default Dark or Solarized Dark now resolves to Default or Solarized. A saved default language that has no tokenizer resets to Plain Text; those files still open, just as plain text. Thank you for using Moped. Bug reports and translations are always welcome.
