Description
WHAT THIS APP IS DJMesh turns an iPhone into a DJ deck. Its headline use is physical: the phone is placed flat on a record player's rotating platter, and the gyroscope and magnetometer measure that rotation to drive audio playback speed and direction, the way a needle does on vinyl. The screen shows a waveform that stays visually stable while the device itself spins. HOW TO TEST WITHOUT A TURNTABLE — NO EXTRA HARDWARE NEEDED The app senses whether a platter is underneath it. When there is none — phone in the hand or lying on a table — it drives itself and is fully operated by touch. All three views work in this state. To evaluate: 1. Grant the Motion permission on first launch (required — the app has no function without it). 2. Load any local audio file (m4a / mp3 / wav / aiff) via "Files (Music / Home)". The app ships without audio content; the tester supplies the track. If no audio file is present on the review device: open the built-in Voice Memos app, record two seconds of anything, then Share → Save to Files. That produces an .m4a which DJMesh loads normally. 3. Lay the phone flat on a table, screen up. 4. Tap the spindle (the centre of the record) to start playback. It plays at normal speed on its own. 5. Drag a finger across the waveform to scratch — forwards and backwards, audible immediately. 6. Release the finger while still moving: that is a throw. The record carries your release speed and eases back to normal play rate. Touch it again during the run-out to catch it. 7. Tap the spindle again to stop. This is the complete core loop and needs no turntable. The three views (Groovy, Wavey, Pure) are switched in Settings → Appearance → View; touch scratch and throw work identically in all of them. ONE THING THAT IS INTENDED BEHAVIOUR On a genuinely spinning platter, touch-scratch is deliberately DISABLED — there the record itself does the scratching, and the platter is the transport, so a stopped platter means silence. This only occurs with real turntable hardware present and is not reachable in a desk test. PERMISSIONS — WHY EACH ONE IS REQUESTED • Motion & Fitness (REQUIRED): gyroscope and magnetometer measure platter rotation. This is the app's core input; there is no alternative source. The magnetometer also corrects gyroscope drift across full revolutions and senses a turntable motor's magnets to answer "is a platter under me". • Local Network (OPTIONAL, may be denied): an optional macOS host or a second iOS device on the same Wi-Fi can follow the deck's position and play the audio on a PA system. Discovery is Bonjour (_djmesh._udp, _djmesh-file._tcp), transport is plain UDP/OSC on the LAN only. Nothing leaves the local network. Denying it leaves standalone use fully intact. • Microphone (OPTIONAL): debugging only, will likely remove this • Bluetooth (OPTIONAL): pairs a class-compliant Bluetooth MIDI controller whose crossfader controls mute. No other Bluetooth use. • Background audio mode: in the mixer/renderer role the device lies next to the mixer and must keep playing with the screen locked. The Info.plist also carries an NSNearbyInteractionUsageDescription reserved for a planned feature; the API is not called in this build and no prompt will appear. ACCOUNTS, PURCHASES, DATA No account, no login, no demo credentials required. No in-app purchases, no subscriptions, no ads. No analytics, no tracking, no user data collected or transmitted to any server. Audio files stay on the device; the only network traffic is optional peer-to-peer LAN communication between the user's own devices. CONTENT The app plays audio files the user already owns and selects manually. No content is bundled, streamed, downloaded or shared. If a file carries Serato-style tags, cue points and loops are read from it (read-only). HARDWARE Designed for iPhone on a direct-drive turntable, fully usable on a desk. Portrait only. No external hardware is required to launch or evaluate.
