Description
Midcent is a writing app for macOS, made to feel less like software and more like paper moving through a machine. The way writing used to feel. The page moves and the cursor stays still. As you type, the text travels toward a fixed typing point, the same way paper moves through a carriage. Hit return and it snaps back. A bell can ring near the end of each line. The cursor doesn't have to blink at you. After a few paragraphs everything falls away and you are just typing. Paper comes in warm ivory, parchment, cotton, newsprint, classic, and soft sepia, with real texture. Write in typewriter faces like Special Elite, Courier Prime, or our own Midcent font, or switch to book serifs like Garamond and Baskerville. The typewriter sounds come from an actual machine. Turn them on, or keep it quiet. Purist Mode disables deletion. Backspace can strike through or type over, and you keep going. It sounds like a gimmick until you notice how much of your time goes to rewriting the last sentence. Midcent is built for novels, for morning pages, for journaling. Split longer work into chapters. Keep character details, plot threads, and research in a drawer beside the manuscript. Save a version before a big revision and restore it later. Focus Mode hides everything but the page. Paper Trail marks the days you wrote. Your files, your Mac. Midcent autosaves as you type, keeps snapshots of your project, and maintains a rolling backup in Word format beside your files. A project is an ordinary folder. Keep it somewhere that syncs to a cloud, or somewhere that doesn't. There's no account. Export a chapter or the whole project to PDF, Word, Markdown, or plain text. Import from Word. Print on paper. There's no AI in Midcent. No suggestions, no autocomplete, no generated text. Not even spellcheck. No cloud, no subscription. Pay once and write all you want. A writing instrument for your Mac.
