Description

Effortlessly organize, cull, review, and share your bird photography. You photographed a thousand frames chasing one warbler. Project Kestrel reads every one of them and turns that chaotic memory card into a clean, quality-sorted timeline of your outing — so you open your photo editor with only the shots worth keeping. ORGANIZE Kestrel groups your bursts into scenes, ranks each scene from sharpest to blurriest, and identifies the birds by species. Your whole outing becomes a browsable timeline instead of an endless scroll of near-duplicates. CULL Clear out the blurry bulk in a few clicks. Set a simple sharpness threshold, review the rejects Kestrel flagged, and click Done. Your photo review burden just got cut by 2/3. REVIEW Kestrel shows you a close-up of every bird in every frame, already sorted sharpest-first — so your review is about pose, light, and artistic choice, not pixel-peeping. Mark your favorites or jump straight into your editor. SEARCH BY SPECIES Every photo is automatically tagged by species and family. Search your entire library — across all your folders and years of shooting — by what you photographed, not just when. SHARE WITH PERCH Tell the story of an outing, not just a single photo. Upload your whole timeline to Perch, personalize it with your own notes, and share an interactive page with anyone — no account required to view it. FITS YOUR WORKFLOW Kestrel exports star ratings straight to Lightroom, Darktable, and other editors — no workflow changes required. Your original photos are never modified and never deleted. FREE, OPEN-SOURCE, AND LOCAL-FIRST Kestrel is free and open source, with no subscription. Visit projectkestrel.org for the free direct download; or purchase Kestrel in the App Store to support the developer. All analysis runs locally — your photos never leave your machine. Got a big backlog? Optional Cloud Compute analyzes it up to 5–10× faster, while the desktop app stays free and local.

What’s New

Version Ruddy Turnstone · 9/6/2026

New in v(Ruddy Turnstone): Kestrel now notices when a folder's photos and its analysis data have drifted apart — moved, renamed, or deleted outside the app. A new Repair dialog offers to reconcile the differences, so you don't need to re-analyze the folder from scratch. Photos are now identified by name and file size. A re-shot card that reuses a filename is analyzed as a new photo instead of being skipped as one Kestrel thought it had already seen. The scene grid now shows your decisions: each thumbnail is the best photo you accepted, hovering the image count breaks out accepted, undecided and rejected, and a new filter shows only unreviewed scenes. 7/8/9 join Z/X/C for Accept/Undecided/Reject. Plus a very large round of data-integrity, stability, crash-recovery and security fixes.
