NeoBox is a native macOS app with a built-in Neo Geo emulator. No setup, no .ini files, no command line. Drop in your ROM folder and play — with save states, CRT shaders, gamepad hot-swap, and per-game memory cards. From Burning Fight to KOF 2003, every official MVS/AES cartridge in the metadata works — including the late carts with custom encryption chips that broke other emulators: SMA, PVC, NEO-PCM2, CMC42/50, K2K2. • Cycle-accurate timing • 60 FPS at the actual Neo Geo refresh rate, not 60Hz • Music-grade audio resampling • Native Metal rendering REAL-TIME CRT SHADER Built into the renderer — scanlines, RGB aperture mask, slight curvature, and a soft vignette, applied at native refresh rate. Optional per game. Sharp pixel-perfect mode is also available for purists. SAVE STATES THAT GET OUT OF YOUR WAY F5 quicksave to a timestamped file, F7 to load the most recent. Cmd+1 through Cmd+9 save to numbered slots, Shift+Cmd+1 through 9 restore them. F12 captures a screenshot at the game's native 304×224. PER-GAME MEMORY CARDS Each cart keeps its own arcade settings, calendar, and high scores. No more accidentally clobbering one game's save data with another. PLUG-AND-PLAY GAMEPAD Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, and MFi controllers work over USB or Bluetooth with zero configuration. D-pad or left analog stick feeds direction; A/B/X/Y map to the Neo Geo A/B/C/D diamond. Keyboard keeps working alongside, so two-player on one machine is friction-free. Customize bindings in Preferences › Controls. PER-GAME OVERRIDES Every cart can override the global defaults: System Mode (AES/MVS/Universe BIOS), region (Japan/USA/Europe), aspect ratio (Auto or Pixel Perfect), shader, fullscreen, volume. Surfaced in the launch popover for quick changes, or in the Properties window for permanent tweaks. BUILT NATIVE, FROM THE GROUND UP NeoBox isn't a wrapper around someone else's command line. ABOUT ROMS NeoBox is an emulator frontend — you provide your own Neo Geo ROMs and BIOS files (neogeo.zip and friends). NeoBox does not ship with any ROMs and does not download them. Standard MAME ZIP format is supported. CREDITS NeoBox embeds the Geolith Neo Geo emulator core by Rupert Carmichael (BSD-3-Clause), with additional credit to ymfm (Aaron Giles, BSD-3-Clause) for YM2610 sound emulation. Fixes a bug where NeoBox could get permanently stuck saying it couldn't load the BIOS. If you upgraded to macOS 27 and NeoBox suddenly stopped finding your BIOS folder, this is the fix. macOS grants an app permission to read a folder separately from remembering where that folder is. That permission can get invalidated, most often by a macOS upgrade, or by the BIOS folder being moved or renamed. When that happened, NeoBox kept retrying the same unreadable folder and failing the same way every time, and the only way out was a full reset from Preferences > Advanced. NeoBox now notices when it can't actually read your BIOS folder and asks you to pick it again, so it recovers on the next launch instead of staying stuck. The BIOS folder browser in Preferences also works properly now if you're on the default Geolith backend. Before, it only updated the setting the MAME backend uses, so picking a folder there looked like it did nothing.
