Description

Sanskrit Lexicon is a Sanskrit–English dictionary for readers who want a clear answer without giving up the original scholarship. Search 250,000+ Sanskrit headwords across 12 classical dictionaries and 9 specialist indexes. Each result opens with a plain-English definition and keeps the full source text one tap away, organized by meaning rather than scattered across separate references. FREE TO START Sanskrit Lexicon is free to download and use. Every reader gets 3 dictionary searches a day, plus the Word of the Day, favorites, personal notes, declension tables, Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight, the widget and iCloud sync. Context searches on a word you have already opened never count toward the daily three. DESCRIBE A WORD YOU CAN'T RECALL Type what a word means, in English or your own language, such as "the churning of the ocean", and see the Sanskrit words that fit, the likeliest marked. Every search is kept under Search Results, synced across your devices. SHARE A WORD • Tap Share on any word or definition to send it as a picture card on the app's painted sky, with a link that opens it in Sanskrit Lexicon or on sanskritlexicon.com. • Save it to Photos, copy it, or send it in Messages, Mail or AirDrop. FIND THE MEANING THAT FITS Describe where you met a word, such as a ritual, a story, grammar, poetry, philosophy or law, and Sanskrit Lexicon finds the definitions that fit. • Save the best matches as a personal category at the top of the definition screen. • See the strongest matches first and remove results you do not need. • Create multiple saved contexts for a word and revisit them across devices. • Find saved context titles in Spotlight or open them through Siri and Shortcuts. UNDERSTAND FIRST. STUDY DEEPLY. • Start with a readable Simplified definition. • Switch any card to Scholar view for the original dictionary text, notation, page references and source links. • See different senses grouped into clear contexts, with the most common sense first. • Keep your own note on any word and select or copy text from any definition. FOLLOW THE WORDS AN ENTRY NAMES Where a definition names other words, a Related line makes them tappable, and a Related Definitions group gathers entries elsewhere that name the word you are reading. SEARCH THE WAY YOU TYPE • Use Devanagari, IAST, Harvard-Kyoto, Velthuis, WX, SLP1 or plain ASCII. • Type "krishna" to find kṛṣṇa; no diacritics or special keyboard required. • Type a declined noun or a conjugated verb and its root comes up with the grammar. • The best match is marked, and similar words follow when the spelling is off. • Explore noun declension tables without leaving the word. BUILT INTO YOUR APPLE DEVICES • Ask Siri to look up a word, or describe one, read today's word, or open a saved word or context. • Ask Siri to send the word on screen to a friend, and it goes as a card. • Add Look Up, Word of the Day and Open Word actions in Shortcuts, and pass a word on as a picture. • Find favorites, recent words, saved contexts and note text in Spotlight. • Put the Word of the Day widget on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, and favorite today's word from it. • Continue reading across devices with iCloud sync and Handoff. MAKE SANSKRIT A DAILY PRACTICE A hand-curated Word of the Day changes at midnight, is the same on all your devices and never repeats. Save favorites, keep notes and return to recent words. DAY AND NIGHT A painted sky, parchment cards and gilded edges frame every definition. In Dark Mode the sky becomes a starlit dusk and the cards darken to match. MADE TO BE READ Text follows your Dynamic Type setting. Search, share and note controls are labeled for VoiceOver, results are spoken as they arrive, and Reduce Motion stills the animations. Searches require an internet connection. No account is required. Privacy Policy: https://sanskritlexicon.com/privacy Terms of Use: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/

What’s New

Version 2.8 · 9/29/2026

Search is faster. Type a Sanskrit word or describe one, and your answer comes back sooner, in the app and with Siri. SMALL IMPROVEMENTS • The search field grows as you type, so you can read your whole description before you search. Its tip now shows both ways to search. • A search counts toward your three free searches a day only once the dictionary answers. A search that can't connect costs nothing. • Opening a word from sanskritlexicon.com no longer uses a free search. • When a search has a best match, Siri answers with it right away and reads the word's main meanings, not just its first definition. The other words are a tap away under Change Word. • Swipe a closed search folder, or a closed saved context on a word, to delete it. • The Word of the Day card switches to the new word at midnight, even while the app is open. • With Reduce Motion on, removing a result or a definition no longer slides the cards. NEW IN 2.7, IN CASE YOU MISSED IT DESCRIBE A WORD • Type what a word means instead of the word itself, in English or in your own language, such as "the churning of the ocean". Sanskrit Lexicon lists the Sanskrit words that fit and marks the likeliest one BEST MATCH. • The search field takes a whole sentence, so you can describe a word the way you would to a friend. • Open a word from a described search, and the definitions that fit your description are waiting at the top of its screen, already open, with the word itself still in view. They stay on the word as a saved context. YOUR SEARCHES, KEPT • Every search now stays under Search Results on the search screen, newest first, each in a folder you can open and close. A described search gets a short title of its own. • Your searches follow you to your other devices with iCloud. • Swipe a word to remove it from a search, or delete a whole search from the foot of its folder. • On iPhone, a round button in the corner jumps between Search, Search Results, Word of the Day, Favorites and Recent. SIRI • Say "Look up a word in Sanskrit Lexicon", and when Siri asks which word, describe it if you like. The search is kept under Search Results, and a word you open from it arrives with its matching definitions on top. ALSO • In a context you saved on a word, swipe a definition to remove it. • A new context is named for you in the language you wrote it in.
