Description
Dextrose Calc does the glucose maths at the cot side: what concentration to prescribe, how to make the bag, and what the baby is actually receiving. Built by a neonatal doctor, for anyone prescribing glucose and feeds. GIR CALCULATOR Enter weight, target GIR and the daily glucose volume — the concentration you need appears as you type. NEW: work the other way round. Enter the concentration running now and see the GIR it delivers. Tells you whether it can go through a peripheral line or needs a central line, and warns when the GIR is above 12 mg/kg/min. NEW: enter volumes as mL/day, mL/kg/day or mL/h. NEW: also shows the infusion rate in mL/h, glucose in g/kg/day, total fluids in mL/kg/day and the approximate osmolarity. Account for other fluids running in the same line. GLUCOSE MIXER The exact volume of each stock bag needed to make any strength, for example 150 mL of glucose 12%. NEW: adjust a bag you already have — how much to remove, and how much of a stronger bag or sterile water to add. Choose which two stock bags to mix from. NUTRITION Add every source a baby is on: IV glucose, amino acids and lipid, breast milk, standard, preterm and fortified feeds. Running totals update as you type: GIR, kcal/kg/day and fluids in mL/kg/day, plus carbohydrate, amino acids and lipid in g/kg/day. NEW: enter feeds per feed (5 mL every 2 hours), as mL/kg/day, or as a daily volume. NEW: fortified milk and other feeds, using the energy and carbohydrate printed on the label. NEW: SET IT UP FOR YOUR UNIT Choose the peripheral line limit your unit uses: 10%, 12.5% or 15%. Tick the glucose stock bags you actually carry. Set breast milk energy, and the lipid emulsion and amino acid solution strengths. ALSO NEW Copy a summary of any calculation, ready to paste into the notes. Dark mode, following your phone or set by hand. Enter the weight once — the GIR and Nutrition screens share it. Results appear as you type, with no Calculate button. A two-pane layout on iPad, with inputs and results side by side. The formulas, thresholds and references the app uses are listed in Settings. Dextrose Calc supports clinical decisions but does not replace them. Always check results against your local guidelines before prescribing.
What’s New
Version 4.0 · 9/16/2026A rebuilt app, faster to use and set up for your unit. Results as you type. No Calculate button, and errors appear under the field instead of as pop-ups. Find the GIR from a concentration you're already running, as well as the other way round. Volumes your way: mL/day, mL/kg/day or mL/h. More on the GIR result: infusion rate in mL/h, glucose in g/kg/day, total fluids in mL/kg/day, approximate osmolarity, and a warning above 12 mg/kg/min. Adjust a glucose bag you already have — how much to remove and how much to add — as well as making a new one. Nutrition totals in kcal/kg/day, mL/kg/day of fluid, and carbohydrate, amino acids and lipid in g/kg/day. Feeds entered per feed (5 mL every 2 hours) or as mL/kg/day, plus fortified milk and other feeds from the label values. Clinical defaults for your unit: peripheral line limit, the stock bags you carry, breast milk energy, and lipid and amino acid solution strengths. Copy a summary of any calculation straight into the notes. Dark mode, following your phone or set by hand. Weight entered once, shared by the GIR and Nutrition screens. Two-pane layout on iPad, with inputs and results side by side. The formulas, thresholds and references the app uses are listed in Settings. Fixed: added nutrition sources sometimes didn't appear, and the mixer stayed silent for out-of-range strengths. Changed: lipid is now counted at 10 kcal/g, matching a 20% emulsion at 2 kcal/mL, so calorie totals are slightly higher than before.
