DynaSynth vs. DynaSinth While they can be confusing, the names are very similar on purpose, representing a shared design theme, i.e. a synth that is dynamic. The DynaSynth design actually came first, and it is based on fairly traditional analog-flavoured oscillators. DynaSinth shares the same dynamics engine but with a modified set of parameters designed to complement the sound of its sine wave oscillators. While I like to think both synths have their own character, and can sound fairly unique, DynaSynth is probably more capable of producing familiar analog synth tones, and DynaSinth lends itself more to keys and pads. ANALOGySTR Retro String Machine (AUv3) ANALOGySTR is a virtual instrument plugin that can run standalone, or in any AU compatible host such as Logic Pro or GarageBand. Overview ANALOGySTR is a tribute to the analog string synthesizers made in the 1970's which are still popular today for good reason. From Pink Floyd to Jean-Michel Jarre, from The Cure to Air, chances are you've heard these "string machines" on countless recordings. Funnily enough, because of the limited technology at the time, they don't actually sound a lot like real strings, but have a distinct tonal character of their own which has become iconic and much loved. Based on sub-octave divider oscillators originally developed for transistor organs, the basic sounds are somewhat thin and reedy but the addition of phaser and "ensemble" effects gives the instruments their distinctive sound and huge appeal. ANALOGySTR has three different base "string" tones that can be blended, and further shaped with high and low pass filters to emulate the limited frequency response of the vintage instruments. Of course, no string machine emulation would be complete without the "ensemble" and phaser effects and ANALOGySTR includes both in its dedicated effects section, with the option to process the signal in classic mono, or super-wide stereo mode. A variable size "plate" type reverb with mono / stereo options completes the effects section. Please note that ANALOGySTR is not intended to be a replica or digital emulation of a specific instrument, but its design and development was heavily influenced by those classic old machines. And while I like to think ANALOGySTR does get pretty close to those vintage string machine tones, it can also stray into other sonic territory, and the presets include examples of organ, choir and synth pad type sounds. PolyDelay Polyrhythmic Delay Plugin (AUv3) PolyDelay is an audio effect plugin that can run standalone, or in any AU compatible host application such as Logic Pro or GarageBand. Overview PolyDelay is a dual delay line / stereo effect with optional host tempo sync. While PolyDelay can be used to create interesting stereo polyrhythmic delays, it can also produce more familiar delay patterns such as dotted eighth and quarter note triplets. Polyrhythms, Divisions and Beats PolyDelay calculates delay times based on a BPM (beats per minute) tempo, and the polyrhythmic notation of D:B, where D = divisions and B = beats. For example, 3:2 would mean that the time for 2 beats should be divided by 3. If you're more use to the idea of note lengths and delay times, such as quarter notes and dotted eighths, etc., this might be confusing at first, but hopefully this guide will help. Firstly, everything starts with the beat! So, for 120BPM, each beat (or quarter note) will be half a second, or 500ms. So if you want a quarter note delay, you want 1 division within one beat, so you would set Divs and Beats to 1. Here are some typical note values, lengths (120BPM) and their D:B values: 1/4 = 500ms = 1:1 (take the length of one beat, and divide that by one) 1/8 = 250ms = 2:1 (take the length of one beat, and divide that by two) 1/16 = 125ms = 4:1 (etc.) 1/32 = 63ms = 8:1 (etc.) See how the divisions are doubled-up for each note? And here are some dotted and triplet note examples - see how the D:B numbers start to get interesting! 1/4D = 750ms = 2:3 1/4T = 333ms = 3:2 1/8D = 375ms = 4:3 1/8T = 167ms = 3:1 A classic stereo delay would be 1:1 (1/4) left, and 4:3 (1/8D) right with Width set to max. If you want a really long delay, a 1:8 setting would give you 4 seconds at 120BPM with Multiply set to Normal, or 8 seconds set to Half. The Presets also include some typical (and not so typical!) examples to get you started. The fun really starts when you start mixing "unusual" (typically odd numbers) divisions and beats, such as 5:4 or 2:7. These sorts of relationships are what we typically refer to as polyrhythms. Try experimenting with PolyDelay on simple sequences and drum parts / patterns and you may start to hear all sorts of interesting rhythmic interplay as your brain tries to figure out what's going on! For additional tone-shaping, PolyDelay includes variable stereo width, a high and low pass filter, stereo modulation and internal limiting to keep audio levels in check. That's because there's actually quite a lot going on "under the hood" of ANALOGyXS. So why make something so simple? I wanted to create something that would allow me to quickly dial-in some of my all-time favourite synth sounds. I also wanted to create something for music-makers who might feel intimidated or overwhelmed with synth plugins with dozens of parameters and 100's of presets. Alternatively, more experienced musicians might like to drop ANALOGyXS into a track just to get something going with a view to replacing it with something more fancy further down the line. ANALOGyGR Granalog Synth (AUv3) ANALOGyGR is a virtual instrument plugin that can run standalone, or in any AU compatible host such as Logic Pro or GarageBand. Please note that the standalone version does not include a built-in keyboard - you need to connect a suitable MIDI device to play the synth. What's a "granalog" synth? It's granular... but (probably) not as you know it. ANALOGyGR (analog-ee gee are) is not a granular synth in the traditional sense, but it does borrow some ideas and terminology from granular synthesis. Please note that ANALOGyGR is not a file-based audio effects processor that allows you to load your own samples, and this is what makes it different, possibly even unique! At its heart, ANALOGyGR is an eight voice polyphonic virtual analog synth with oscillators that are rendered as "grains". While ANALOGyGR can get close to sounding like a "normal" synth, it's really aimed at people who prefer more experimental type sound design and atmospheric textures. For traditional analog sounds, I'd ask you to also take a look at the popular ANALOGyXS (poly) and ANALOGyX1 (mono) synths as all three cover slightly different sonic territory. Design Overview Each of the 8 voices in ANALOGyGR have 3 dedicated grain oscillators each (saw, triangle and square waveforms), and these 24 oscillators are used to generate grains of varying shape (saw, ramp and triangle envelopes) and variable length (50ms to 10 seconds). The oscillator and grain shape can also be randomly selected on each grain cycle for some really interesting dynamic textures, and grains are also randomly spread in the stereo field. ANALOGyGR also has a noise generator that can be applied to the main amplitude ASR envelope, or at the grain level. Grain notes can be pitched up or down an octave on alternate cycles or randomly per voice, and can also glide from one note to the next which can make even the simplest chord sound much more intriguing! ANALOGyGR also shares many of the "under the hood" features introduced in ANALOGyXS and ANALOGyX1 which can result is some very complex, evolving and dramatic sounds for a relatively small synth with just 16 parameters. Speaking of which... ANALOGyGR has been designed very much as a performance-based instrument to be played and manipulated in real-time. To facilitate this, all of the instrument parameters are controllable via dedicated MIDI CCs from your keyboard or another MIDI generator plugin. ANALOGyGR can also respond to channel and polyphonic aftertouch pressure MIDI messages for an enhanced and expressive playing experience. As the sounds of ANALOGyGR typically tend to evolve over time, it is perhaps better suited to sustained note passages and sparse / simple chord voicings combined with a dynamic playing style. AuTranspose can get as low as around 25ms latency which is just about good enough for a guitar octaver type application, but will probably sound a bit “wobbly” / “lo-fi” on more general audio. If you’re interested in a more guitar-centric octaver, please check out OttavaBassa which uses similar DSP, but tuned for guitar. AuTranspose does not report its latency to the host! This is by design. Instead, the current latency is shown on the UI in samples (and ms) so you can decide yourself if you need to compensate for it - for example, when remixing projects and you need to re-sync tracks that aren’t going through AuTranspose. So what is it for, and why did I make it? In my own search for a simple pitch shifter, I found that the really simple ones didn’t sound so good, and the ones that did produce good results were fairly complicated and / or CPU intensive. So I tried to make something that was very simple to use, that produced reasonable results. When might AuTranspose be useful? Backing tracks: You might want to transpose up or down by a semitone or two to put the song in a more comfortable key to sing, or perhaps you tune your guitar to Eb. In these situations, you could probably transpose the whole track up or down and it’ll still sound OK. The only other thing to keep in mind is that the playback of the track will be delayed by the latency so as long as the backing track doesn’t have to sync with anything else, you should be fine. Remixing recorded projects: Perhaps you have a project that’s audio only and you’ve decided it needs to be in a different key. You could use AuTranspose to pitch-shift the tracks or stems that need to be in key, but leave the percussion tracks as they are. You can then add a sample length delay (*) to these tracks so that everything plays in sync. For convenience AuTranspose reports the number of samples to adjust by. And of course, you could simply use AuTranspose as an effect in itself, for example as a “Lo-Fi” pitch shifter for a retro vibe. There are a few examples in the factory presets to get you started. (*) In cases where you need to compensate for latency on tracks that aren’t using AuTranspose, add a sample delay plugin to those tracks and set the number of samples to what’s reported on the AuTranspose UI. There are several sample delay plugins available, although many of the free ones (Apple’s included) don’t go that high. By the time you read this, MicroLag should be available which supports longer delay times.

MidiMixer is an AUv3 plugin specifically designed for AUM which allows you to control your mix and record automation synced to AUM's timeline. You can control up to 12 AUM channels at once and create up to 8 snapshots of the mixing desk. You can smoothly fade from one snapshot into another at the touch of a button and even record these transitions as part of the automation for your song. Automation recording is a big part of MidiMixer, and as such can record real-time movement of controls or add them directly to the visual editor. Editor tools allow you to draw automation for each control in real time as your song plays. MidiMixer ships with a couple of default AUM session templates that will help you quickly configure AUM and MidiMixer ready to create your new song. MidiMixer works by sending control messages to AUM. It relies on the default settings for AUM which makes setup very quick and easy.
